CVE-2022-29901, known as Retbleed, is a speculative-execution vulnerability in certain Intel sixth- through eighth-generation processors, including Skylake through Rocket Lake systems exhibiting Return Stack Buffer Alternate Behavior. When the Return Stack Buffer underflows, a return instruction can be speculatively redirected through Branch Target Buffer prediction. Non-transparent sharing of branch-predictor targets between execution contexts permits a local low-privileged attacker to influence speculative control flow and bypass kernel retpoline protections. The resulting transient execution can expose data through microarchitectural side channels.
