CVE-2022-31159 is a partial path traversal vulnerability in the AWS SDK for Java v1 S3 TransferManager component prior to version 1.12.261. The flaw affects the TransferManager.downloadDirectory method, which downloads objects from an S3 bucket into a local destination directory. Although the caller controls the destinationDirectory argument, the object keys are derived from bucket contents and may be attacker-controlled when downloading untrusted data. The method attempted to validate key names to prevent filesystem traversal, but the validation could be bypassed by including a UNIX double-dot sequence in the S3 object key. Under certain conditions, this allows downloaded content to be written outside the intended destination directory and into a sibling directory one level higher in the filesystem hierarchy, provided the target directory name shares the destination directory prefix.
