CVE-2022-31705 is a heap out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the USB 2.0 controller (EHCI) implementation used by VMware ESXi, VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, and VMware Cloud Foundation. The flaw allows a malicious actor with local administrative privileges inside a guest virtual machine to trigger memory corruption in the host-side VMX process that services the virtual machine. Successful exploitation can result in execution of attacker-controlled code in the context of the VMX process. On ESXi, execution is constrained by the VMX sandbox; on Workstation and Fusion, exploitation may result in code execution on the underlying host system where the virtualization software is installed.

This repository is a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for CVE-2022-31705, a vulnerability in VMware Workstation 16.2.0's EHCI (USB controller) emulation. The exploit consists of a Linux kernel module (ehci.c) that, when loaded in a Linux guest VM, manipulates USB controller data structures to trigger an out-of-bounds write in the host's emulated EHCI controller. The Makefile is used to build the kernel module, and run.sh automates the build, insertion, and removal of the module, as well as collecting kernel logs. The README provides detailed instructions and background on the vulnerability, including how to select the correct USB device and what memory structures are affected. The exploit requires a specific VMware and guest configuration and is intended for research and demonstration purposes. No network endpoints or external IPs/domains are present; the attack vector is from guest to host via virtualization.
