CVE-2022-33140 is an operating system command injection vulnerability in the optional ShellUserGroupProvider component of Apache NiFi 1.10.0 through 1.16.2 and Apache NiFi Registry 0.6.0 through 1.16.2. The provider does not properly neutralize arguments used in group resolution commands, allowing user-controlled input to influence shell command construction on Linux and macOS systems. The vulnerable functionality is not enabled by default; exploitation is only possible when ShellUserGroupProvider is configured as an active User Group Provider in the Authorizers configuration. In Apache NiFi, exploitation requires an authenticated user with permission to modify access policies. In Apache NiFi Registry, exploitation requires an authenticated user with permission to read user groups. The vendor fix removes command formatting based on user-provided arguments during group resolution.
