CVE-2022-33980 affects Apache Commons Configuration versions 2.4 through 2.7. The library's default variable-interpolation configuration enables lookup implementations for script evaluation, DNS resolution, and URL retrieval. When an application processes attacker-controlled configuration values containing interpolation expressions, the script lookup can evaluate expressions through the JVM scripting engine, while DNS and URL lookups can initiate unintended outbound resolution or retrieval operations. Apache Commons Configuration 2.8.0 disables these problematic default interpolators.

This repository is a proof-of-concept (POC) exploit for CVE-2022-33980, a remote code execution vulnerability in Apache Commons Configuration2 version 2.5. The repository contains a single Java test class (src/main/java/com/txf/main.java) that demonstrates exploitation by leveraging the vulnerable interpolation feature. The exploit constructs a payload using the 'script' prefix to execute arbitrary JavaScript, which in turn calls Java's Runtime.exec to launch the Calculator application on macOS. The repository is structured as a Maven project, with dependencies on Apache Commons Configuration2 and JUnit for testing. No network endpoints or remote targets are hardcoded; the exploit demonstrates local code execution via configuration interpolation. The main exploit capability is arbitrary command execution on the system where the vulnerable library is used and attacker-controlled input is interpolated.
