CVE-2022-44667 is a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft DirectMusic, specifically in the Core Services DLL dmusic.dll. The flaw is triggered when DirectMusic loads and parses a specially crafted DLS file. During processing of articulation data, an integer overflow can occur in size calculations derived from connection counts, leading to inconsistent buffer sizing across parsing, object size computation, buffer allocation, and serialization paths. This can culminate in an out-of-bounds write in the IDirectMusicPort COM component during a memory copy operation. The vulnerable logic involves articulation handling routines including CArticulation::Load, CInstrObj::Size, CDirectMusicPortDownload::DownloadP, and CArticulation::Write, where truncated or overflowed size values can cause insufficient allocation followed by unsafe copying of attacker-controlled data.
