CVE-2022-48804 is a flaw in the Linux kernel virtual-terminal ioctl activation path, in vt_setactivate. The code applied array_index_nospec to vsa.console before subtracting one to convert the user-supplied console number into a zero-based index. For an out-of-bounds value, array_index_nospec transiently yields zero; the subsequent decrement therefore transiently underflows the unsigned index. The fix decrements vsa.console before applying array_index_nospec, preventing the transient underflow.
