Specifically, after commit 6a01afcf8468, the mesh Information Element (IE) memory is freed both during mesh leave (ieee80211_leave_mesh) and again during mesh join (copy_mesh_setup), leading to potential memory corruption or kernel panics. This is triggered when mesh join/leave operations are performed in quick succession, particularly when not using wpa_supplicant, but rather custom tools like Senf that interact directly with nl80211.
