CVE-2023-20869 is a stack-based buffer overflow in the virtual Bluetooth device implementation used by VMware Workstation 17.x and VMware Fusion 13.x when sharing host Bluetooth functionality with a guest virtual machine. The flaw is in the host-side vmware-vmx process while it parses Bluetooth Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) traffic originating from the guest. In the vulnerable request path, SDP packet handling reaches SDPData_ReadRawInt, where attacker-controlled element length data is copied into a fixed 16-byte stack buffer without adequate bounds enforcement. A crafted SDP data element with a length greater than 16 can corrupt adjacent stack memory, including control-flow data, resulting in guest-to-host escape. Public technical analysis describes the bug as reachable through SDP service search and attribute request handling in the VBluetooth implementation and notes that VMware corrected it by rejecting oversized lengths.
