CVE-2023-2449 is an unauthorized password reset vulnerability in the UserPro plugin for WordPress affecting versions up to and including 5.1.1. The issue is caused by insufficient validation in the password reset handler, identified as userpro_process_form, which relies on the plaintext value of a password reset key rather than a properly protected hashed value. Because the reset key can be retrieved more easily than intended, an attacker who obtains that key can invoke the native password reset workflow to reset another user’s password without authorization. The vulnerability is particularly dangerous when chained with CVE-2023-2448, CVE-2023-2446, or another weakness such as SQL injection in a co-installed plugin or theme that exposes the reset key or related data.
