CVE-2023-29007 is an arbitrary Git configuration-injection vulnerability in the configuration section copy-or-rename logic used while removing a submodule’s configuration. In affected Git releases, attacker-controlled submodule URL values exceeding 1024 characters can cause specially crafted repository metadata to inject arbitrary configuration directives into the local repository configuration during submodule deinitialization. Injected directives can set execution-related Git options, including pager, editor, or SSH command settings, leading to code execution when the affected option is subsequently invoked.
