CVE-2023-2917 affects Rockwell Automation ThinManager ThinServer and is caused by improper input validation of the filename field when ThinManager processes a certain function in its synchronization protocol handling. The flaw allows path traversal, enabling an attacker to control the destination path of an uploaded file. By sending a crafted synchronization protocol message, an unauthenticated remote attacker can upload arbitrary files to any directory on the disk drive where ThinServer.exe is installed. Because the attacker can place files in attacker-chosen locations, the vulnerability may be leveraged to achieve remote code execution depending on file placement and execution conditions on the target system.

This repository contains a single Metasploit auxiliary module targeting CVE-2023-2917, a path traversal vulnerability in Rockwell Automation ThinManager (versions <= 13.1.0). The module allows an attacker to upload an arbitrary file to an arbitrary location on the target system by exploiting the path traversal flaw in the ThinManager service, which listens on TCP port 2031. The exploit works by prepending a user-specified number of '../' sequences to the target file path, enabling the attacker to escape the intended directory and write files anywhere on the filesystem. The uploaded file is written with SYSTEM privileges, making this a powerful primitive for further exploitation (such as planting a malicious executable for later execution). The module requires the attacker to provide a local file to upload and the desired remote file path. The code is operational and can be used to achieve arbitrary file write on vulnerable ThinManager installations.
