CVE-2023-29201 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in XWiki Commons affecting the HTML cleaner's "restricted" mode, introduced in version 4.2-milestone-1. The restricted mode only escaped <script> and <style> tags, but failed to sanitize dangerous HTML attributes capable of script execution and did not block other dangerous elements such as <iframe>. As a result, applications or code paths that relied on restricted mode as a security boundary could allow attacker-supplied HTML to inject and execute JavaScript. If a privileged XWiki user with programming rights views malicious content such as a crafted comment, the injected JavaScript executes in that user's browser session and can be leveraged to perform privileged actions, including achieving server-side code execution with programming rights.
