CVE-2023-31126 affects org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml, the XML library used by XWiki. In the HTML sanitizer introduced in version 14.6-rc-1, invalid data-* attribute names are not properly constrained, allowing arbitrary HTML to be injected through malformed data attributes. This sanitizer failure can result in cross-site scripting (XSS). The issue does not affect restricted cleaning in HTMLCleaner, because in that mode attribute names are cleaned and disallowed characters such as / and > are removed from all attribute names. The flaw was fixed by enforcing that data attributes contain only allowed characters.
