CVE-2023-32309 affects PyMdown Extensions, specifically the Snippets extension used with Python-Markdown. In affected versions, the include file syntax can be abused to read arbitrary files from the host filesystem. An attacker can supply snippet directives such as --8<--"/etc/passwd" or --8<--"/proc/self/environ" to render the contents of those files in generated documentation. The base_path restriction intended to limit accessible files is bypassable via directory traversal using relative paths such as --8<-- "../../../../etc/passwd". The vulnerable logic is in get_snippet_path(self, path) in snippets.py (reported at lines 155-174). As a result, any readable file on the system where the plugin executes may be exposed if untrusted users can influence Snippets input.

If you can’t patch tonight, do this now.
../. Run the rendering process with least-privilege filesystem permissions so that only non-sensitive files are readable by the service account.Patch, then assume compromise.
