CVE-2023-36851 is a missing authentication for a critical function in Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series devices. The flaw is in the J-Web management interface, where requests to a J-Web operation endpoint are not properly protected by authentication. As a result, an unauthenticated network attacker can interact with the exposed functionality to upload and download arbitrary files through J-Web. The vulnerability affects multiple Junos OS release trains on SRX Series, including 21.2 before 21.2R3-S8, 21.4 before 21.4R3-S6, 22.1 before 22.1R3-S5, 22.2 before 22.2R3-S3, 22.3 before 22.3R3-S2, 22.4 before 22.4R2-S2 and 22.4R3, and 23.2 before 23.2R1-S2 and 23.2R2. The direct security consequence is unauthorized file transfer against the device, causing limited file system integrity impact and potential confidentiality loss, and it may be chained with other vulnerabilities for more severe outcomes.
