CVE-2023-37460 affects Plexus Archiver prior to 4.8.0. When applications use AbstractUnArchiver to extract an archive, a crafted archive can trigger arbitrary file creation outside the intended destination directory. The issue arises from the handling of pre-existing symbolic links in the extraction path: if an archive entry maps to a path that already exists as a symlink whose target does not exist, the resolveFile() logic may return the symlink source path rather than the symlink target. This causes the path validation check to incorrectly conclude that extraction remains within the destination directory. Subsequently, Files.newOutputStream(), which follows symlinks by default, writes the extracted content to the symlink target, enabling a write outside the intended extraction root. In contexts where the attacker can place executable content or overwrite security-relevant files, this may lead to remote code execution.
