CVE-2023-38490 is an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in Kirby CMS affecting versions prior to 3.5.8.3, 3.6.6.3, 3.7.5.2, 3.8.4.1, and 3.9.6. The issue is present in Kirby's Xml::parse() method and therefore also in the Xml data handler used via Data::decode($string, 'xml'). The vulnerable code used PHP's LIBXML_NOENT constant, which caused external entities to be expanded during XML parsing. Kirby core itself does not use the affected XML parsing paths, but site or plugin code may invoke them, for example when parsing RSS feeds or other XML documents. If attacker-controlled XML is passed to these methods, an attacker can define external entities that are resolved during parsing.

This repository provides a proof-of-concept (POC) exploit for CVE-2023-38490, an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in Kirby CMS versions <= 3.9.5. The exploit is demonstrated using a Docker environment that sets up a vulnerable Kirby Starterkit instance (version 3.9.5) with a custom RSS feed model. The key file, 'docker/rssfeed-model.php', allows user-supplied URLs via the 'feed' GET parameter, which are fetched and parsed as XML without proper sanitization, enabling XXE attacks. The README details exploitation steps: building and running the Docker container, serving a malicious XML payload, and triggering the exploit via a crafted URL. The repository includes Docker configuration files, PHP templates for the RSS feed, and a sample content file. The exploit demonstrates the risk of XXE in custom Kirby deployments and is intended for research and educational purposes only.
