CVE-2023-40029 is an information disclosure vulnerability in Argo CD affecting declaratively managed cluster secrets. When cluster secrets are created or updated using Argo CD or kubectl apply, the full secret body can be stored in the kubectl.kubernetes.io/last-applied-configuration annotation. A change introduced by pull request #7139 added support for managing cluster labels and annotations; because Argo CD stores clusters as Kubernetes secrets, this also exposed the kubectl.kubernetes.io/last-applied-configuration annotation through the Argo CD API and cluster details view. As a result, users able to retrieve cluster annotations may obtain the full serialized secret contents from that annotation. In deployments using sensitive authentication material such as bearer tokens, this can expose credentials.

This repository contains a single Bash script (CVE-2023-40029.sh) that exploits CVE-2023-40028, an arbitrary file read vulnerability in Ghost CMS. The script requires valid admin credentials and the URL of a target Ghost instance. It authenticates to the Ghost admin API, crafts a ZIP file containing a symlink to a user-specified file, and uploads it via the database import endpoint. The script then retrieves the contents of the targeted file by accessing the resulting image URL. The exploit is interactive, allowing the user to specify different file paths to read in a loop. The script demonstrates a practical, operational exploit for this vulnerability, leveraging network access to the Ghost admin API and requiring valid credentials. The endpoints targeted are the session creation, database import, and the public images directory for file retrieval.
