CVE-2023-40498 is a remote code execution vulnerability in LG Simple Editor, specifically in the cp command within the makeDetailContent method. The vulnerability arises from improper validation of user-supplied paths, allowing directory traversal. This enables an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM by supplying crafted paths to file operations.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (Ruby file) that exploits a remote code execution vulnerability (CVE-2023-40498) in LG Simple Editor for Windows (versions <= 3.21). The exploit leverages broken access control and directory traversal flaws to upload a malicious JSP file containing a base64-encoded Windows executable payload. The module first checks the target's version by querying the '/simpleeditor/common/commonReleaseNotes.do' endpoint. If vulnerable, it uploads the payload via '/simpleeditor/imageManager/uploadImage.do', then uses '/simpleeditor/fileSystem/makeDetailContent.do' to rename the uploaded file to a .jsp extension. Finally, it triggers the payload by sending a GET request to the new JSP file, resulting in code execution as SYSTEM. The module is weaponized, allowing customizable payloads and full remote code execution. The only file in the repository is a Metasploit exploit module written in Ruby.
