CVE-2023-4273 is a kernel-stack buffer overflow in the Linux kernel exFAT filesystem driver, in exfat_get_uniname_from_ext_entry(). During directory enumeration, the function reconstructs a long filename by copying characters from exFAT filename extension entries into the stack-resident uniname buffer. Although the buffer is limited to 258 characters, the vulnerable logic can continue copying until the directory entry-set count is reached. A malformed, format-violating exFAT directory entry set containing excessive filename entries can therefore exceed the buffer capacity. An example with 100 filename entries can process up to 1,500 characters, overflowing the buffer by up to 1,242 UTF-16 characters (2,484 bytes).
