CVE-2023-52463 is a flaw in the Linux kernel efivarfs filesystem on UEFI systems whose firmware does not implement the SetVariable runtime service. In this configuration, efivarfs is initially mounted read-only and no SetVariable callback is assigned. Vulnerable kernels fail to preserve that restriction during a remount request, allowing efivarfs to be remounted read-write. A subsequent EFI variable write invokes the unassigned callback through the efivarfs write path, resulting in a kernel NULL pointer dereference. The issue was introduced in Linux kernel 5.8.
