CVE-2023-52522 is a concurrency flaw in the Linux kernel networking neighbor subsystem's neigh_periodic_work() worker. When deleting an RCU-protected neighbor-table item, the writer did not use rcu_assign_pointer() or WRITE_ONCE() while concurrent readers dereferenced the pointer through rcu_dereference(). The unprotected pointer update could be torn, allowing a concurrent reader to observe an inconsistent pointer value. The upstream correction uses rcu_assign_pointer(), providing both an atomic publication primitive appropriate for RCU readers and lockdep coverage.
