CVE-2023-52578 is a race condition in the Linux kernel bridge networking subsystem's br_handle_frame_finish() function. The function may execute concurrently on multiple CPUs without mutual exclusion while updating shared network-device statistics, including dropped-transmit counters. Non-atomic updates can race and lose or corrupt statistics values. The upstream fix replaces the affected increments with SMP-safe DEV_STATS_INC() operations, including updates to the dropped-transmit statistic.
