CVE-2023-52580 is an incorrect buffer-size calculation in the Linux kernel net/core flow dissector's handling of ETH_P_1588 (raw IEEE 1588 PTP Ethernet) frames. A PTP raw Ethernet frame larger than 256 bytes followed by bytes with value 0xff can cause the dissector to interpret the PTP message-length field as 0xffff rather than the actual header length. The resulting offset calculation overflows a 16-bit value, corrupting the network-header offset used for packet dissection and causing a kernel crash. The upstream correction advances the offset using the size of the PTP header structure rather than the untrusted message-length value.
