CVE-2023-52581 is a resource-management vulnerability in the Linux kernel Netfilter nf_tables subsystem. During garbage collection of expired set elements, the transaction garbage-collection container type used an 8-bit value. When more than 255 elements expired, the value wrapped before the boundary check, causing the space check to continue succeeding. nf_tables then reused the initial garbage-collection container and lost references to elements processed earlier, leaking their memory. The upstream correction switches containers at the intended boundary and avoids dereferencing the garbage-collection object after passing it to deferred RCU cleanup.
