CVE-2023-52771 is a race condition in the Linux kernel Compute Express Link (CXL) port subsystem. During CXL endpoint or memory-device teardown, delete_endpoint() determines whether to remove the endpoint hierarchy or only the memory device while an ancestor CXL port is being removed. The function accesses and locks the endpoint parent device without retaining a reference to that parent, allowing concurrent parent-device unregistration to free it first. This can result in a use-after-free while attempting to acquire the parent device lock. In Root Complex Integrated Endpoint (RCH) topologies, the affected logic can also select an incorrect parent by relying on the port returned by cxl_mem_find_port() rather than the endpoint's actual device parent.
