CVE-2023-52924 is a resource-lifetime flaw in the Linux kernel netfilter nf_tables subsystem. In timeout-enabled verdict maps, set walks used while deleting a set could skip expired elements. If an expired element referenced an nftables chain, preparation-phase processing could fail to update that chain's use count, while commit or abort processing subsequently handled the element inconsistently. When the set was culled, the destruction path could process an element that had not previously been deactivated, leaking the chain use count and associated nft_chain structure. The defect could also cause a WARN condition on subsequent chain removal and erroneous ENOENT responses to nftables flush operations. The fix changes pipapo_get() to include expired elements during these walks.

Linux kernel Netfilter nf_tables vulnerability involving handling of expired elements during a table walk.
A Linux kernel netfilter nf_tables flaw involving handling of expired elements during a ruleset walk. It affects Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 kernel-rt packages covered by RHSA-2026:63189.
A Linux kernel netfilter nf_tables flaw affecting verdict maps with timeouts. Expired elements could be skipped during set walks, leaving nft_chain use counts unmodified; subsequent destruction could leak the chain use count and nft_chain structure, and produce WARN messages when the chain is removed.
A Linux kernel netfilter/nf_tables flaw involving handling of expired elements during a walk operation. It is addressed by the RHSA-2026:61692 RHEL 7 kernel update.
