CVE-2023-53240 is a NULL-pointer dereference in the Linux kernel AF_XDP (xsk) transmit path. Before the fix, the sendmsg() path could mark a NAPI ID before validating that the network device bound to the AF_XDP socket had the IFF_UP flag set. Although the shared xsk_xmit() routine subsequently checked IFF_UP and returned an error for a down interface, that validation occurred after the unsafe NAPI-ID handling. Transmission through sendmsg() on a bound but down interface could therefore dereference a NULL pointer in xsk_sendmsg(). The fix moves applicable sanity checks into the sendmsg() and poll() paths before NAPI-ID handling, while limiting xsk_xmit() to generic transmit processing and RCU handling.

A Linux kernel AF_XDP (xsk) transmit-path NULL-pointer dereference caused by checking whether the network interface is up too late in the sendmsg() path. The fix moves/populates sanity checks earlier in the relevant transmit paths.
A Linux kernel XSK transmit-path flaw addressed by checking the IFF_UP interface state earlier.
Linux kernel AF_XDP (xsk) transmit-path flaw involving delayed IFF_UP interface-state checking.
