CVE-2023-6040 is an out-of-bounds memory-access vulnerability in the Linux kernel Netfilter nf_tables component. When creating a new Netfilter table, nf_tables_newtable() failed to validate unsupported or invalid protocol-family values. The invalid value can subsequently reach paths including xt_find_target and nf_logger_find_get, causing access to adjacent global data outside intended memory bounds.
