CVE-2024-0406 is a path-traversal vulnerability in the mholt/archiver Go library, including the v3 module. A specially crafted TAR archive can cause extraction operations to access files or directories outside the intended destination. The flaw may permit creation or overwriting of files using the privileges of the user or application performing extraction.

This repository provides a Python proof-of-concept exploit for CVE-2024-0406, a path traversal vulnerability in tar archive extraction (notably in mholt/archiver v3.5.0 and prior). The exploit consists of a single script (script.py) that generates a malicious tar archive containing both a symlink and a payload file with the same name. The symlink points to an attacker-specified target path (e.g., a session file or directory), and the payload contains arbitrary data (such as a forged session granting admin privileges). The script can then upload the crafted archive to a specified HTTP endpoint (e.g., http://localhost:1337/user/upload), optionally using authentication cookies and custom headers. If the target application extracts the archive using a vulnerable library, the payload will be written to the symlink target, resulting in arbitrary file overwrite. The README.md provides context, usage instructions, and a disclaimer. The exploit is a functional PoC and does not include weaponized or framework-level automation.
