CVE-2024-13972 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Sophos Intercept X for Windows updater, affecting Sophos Endpoint and Workload Protection for Windows prior to Core Agent version 2024.3.2. The flaw is caused by overly permissive Windows registry access control lists applied to upgrade-related registry keys during product upgrades. Because these registry permissions allowed modification by non-administrative local users, an attacker with local access could alter registry values or subkeys that influence the upgrade process, including path redirection or malicious data injection. When the updater subsequently runs during an upgrade with SYSTEM privileges, it may process the attacker-controlled registry data, resulting in elevation to SYSTEM. The issue is rooted in improper restriction of registry key modification to trusted accounts such as SYSTEM or TrustedInstaller.
