CVE-2024-20481 is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the Remote Access VPN (RAVPN) service of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software. The flaw is caused by resource exhaustion in the VPN authentication handling path. An unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit the issue by sending a large volume of VPN authentication requests to an affected device, causing the device to consume excessive resources and rendering the RAVPN service unavailable. In some cases, recovery of the VPN service may require a device reload. The condition affects the VPN service specifically; services unrelated to VPN are not impacted.
