CVE-2024-20666 is a BitLocker security feature bypass in the Windows boot environment. The issue is described as an abuse of the BCD systemdatadevice element that causes winload to obtain the SYSTEM registry hive from an attacker-controlled device rather than the expected trusted source. By redirecting where winload reads the SYSTEM hive during boot, an attacker can influence early-boot behavior and pivot into a post-boot compromise path. The vulnerability affects BitLocker’s protection assumptions in scenarios where the platform will release secrets during boot, enabling compromise of a protected system despite BitLocker being enabled.
