CVE-2024-26766 is an off-by-one error in the Linux kernel IB/hfi1 SDMA transmit-descriptor handling. A prior change failed to correctly determine when the transmit descriptor array must be expanded for padding. An SDMA transmission containing exactly six descriptors and requiring dword padding writes a seventh descriptor beyond the allocated array and corrupts adjacent fields in the containing transmit-request structure. Corruption is subsequently dereferenced during send completion, causing a kernel fault or panic.
