CVE-2024-26973 is an improper-initialization flaw in the Linux kernel FAT filesystem's nostale filehandle encoding path. When fat_encode_fh_nostale() generates a filehandle without parent information, it populates only 10 bytes even though the required aligned filehandle length is 12 bytes. The remaining two bytes are uninitialized and can be returned to userspace as part of the encoded handle.
