CVE-2024-26974 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel Intel QuickAssist Technology (QAT) driver during PCI Advanced Error Reporting (AER) recovery. A race condition exists in the reset and restart path involving the lifetime of the reset_data structure associated with asynchronous work. If device restart takes longer than the 10-second timeout used by the function scheduling the restart, that function can time out and free the reset_data structure while the worker still later uses it for completion notification after restart. This creates a stale pointer dereference in the QAT reset worker path, manifested as a KFENCE-reported use-after-free read in adf_device_reset_worker.
