CVE-2024-26984 is a race condition in the Linux kernel Nouveau NVIDIA graphics driver’s instance-memory handling. Concurrent execution of nv50_instobj_acquire() can permit a thread to successfully increment an instance object reference count before the pointer array initialization is observable. Because the reference-count initialization lacked required memory ordering, subsequent Nouveau virtual-memory code, including gp100_vmm_pgt_mem(), can observe the pointer field as NULL and dereference it. The upstream fix adds paired read/write memory barriers to order pointer publication relative to reference-count operations.
