CVE-2024-27022 is a race condition in the Linux kernel fork path affecting file-backed VMAs, including hugetlbfs mappings. During dup_mmap(), a child VMA could be inserted into the file mapping's i_mmap interval tree and thus become visible to concurrent operations before hugetlb_dup_vma_private() and the VMA open callback had completed initialization of its VMA lock. A concurrent hugetlbfs hole-punch operation could traverse the visible VMA and attempt to acquire or release the uninitialized lock. The fix defers linking file VMAs into the i_mmap tree until VMA initialization is complete.
