CVE-2024-28176 is an uncontrolled resource-consumption vulnerability in the jose JavaScript library's JSON Web Encryption decryption interfaces. When decrypting a JWE containing compressed plaintext, decompression after decryption can consume unreasonable CPU time or memory under certain conditions. Specially crafted compressed JWE payloads may expand far beyond their encrypted token size, defeating application assumptions based solely on token-size limits. The issue is fixed in jose 2.0.7 and 4.15.5.
