A vulnerability in OpenMetadata prior to version 1.2.4 allows authenticated non-admin users to achieve remote code execution (RCE) via SpEL (Spring Expression Language) injection. The AlertUtil::validateExpression method evaluates user-supplied SpEL expressions using StandardEvaluationContext, which permits access to Java classes such as java.lang.Runtime. The /api/v1/events/subscriptions/validation/condition/<expression> endpoint passes user-controlled data to this method without proper authorization checks, enabling arbitrary command execution on the underlying operating system. The vulnerability is due to both improper input validation and missing authorization enforcement.

This repository contains a single Metasploit module (modules/exploits/linux/http/openmetadata_auth_bypass_rce.rb) that exploits a chain of two vulnerabilities in OpenMetadata (CVE-2024-28255 and CVE-2024-28254) affecting versions 1.2.3 and below. The exploit first bypasses authentication by abusing path parameter parsing in the JWT filter, then leverages a SpEL injection vulnerability to achieve unauthenticated remote command execution via the /api/v1/events/subscriptions/validation/condition/<expression> endpoint. The module is written in Ruby and is fully integrated into the Metasploit framework, supporting payload customization and automated exploitation. The exploit is weaponized, providing reliable unauthenticated RCE on vulnerable OpenMetadata instances. The code also includes version detection logic and targets both Linux and Unix platforms. Multiple fingerprintable HTTP endpoints are used for authentication bypass and exploitation.
