OpenPrinting CUPS 2.4.8 and earlier improperly handles a symbolic link supplied through a cupsd Listen configuration item during cupsd startup. The daemon can apply chmod to the link target rather than safely rejecting or resolving the symbolic link, allowing permissions on an attacker-selected target to be changed to world-writable. Because cupsd commonly runs as root, this can affect user or system files. Under Ubuntu's AppArmor policy, the scope is restricted to files that cupsd is permitted to modify; however, writable CUPS configuration can be leveraged to alter service settings and form part of a subsequent privilege-escalation chain.
