CVE-2024-35853 is a memory-leak flaw in the Linux kernel mlxsw Spectrum ACL TCAM implementation. During delayed virtual-region rehash work, filters are migrated between regions. If migration fails, the code attempts to roll filters back to the original region. A failure of that rollback could trigger an additional migration attempt. Virtual chunks retain both an active chunk and a backup chunk; during a rollback-of-a-rollback condition, the implementation could overwrite an existing backup-chunk reference without releasing it, leaking the referenced allocation. The upstream correction prevents rollback after a failed rollback and adds a warning for invalid future states.
