CVE-2024-35857 is a NULL-pointer dereference vulnerability in the Linux kernel ICMP function icmp_build_probe(). An IPv4 interface check calls __in_dev_get_rcu() twice, allowing the second call to return NULL even when the first succeeds. An IPv6 interface check also dereferences dev->ip6_ptr without checking for NULL before accessing its address list. The upstream correction uses the appropriate read-copy-update (RCU) APIs to prevent these unsafe accesses.
