CVE-2024-35896 is an out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel Netfilter IPv4 iptables control path. The affected handling of Netfilter setsockopt requests did not validate the user-supplied optlen against the length expected by the requested operation before copying from the socket-option buffer. A malformed length can cause do_replace, reached through do_ipt_set_ctl and nf_setsockopt, to read beyond the supplied buffer. The issue was exposed after changes to BPF cgroup setsockopt processing caused option data to be copied into a smaller kernel allocation.
