CVE-2024-35960 is a NULL-pointer dereference vulnerability in the Linux kernel net/mlx5 flow-steering implementation. The add_rule_fg logic linked a newly created rule into the flow-steering tree only when its reference count was one. During creation of a flow handle, create_flow_handle can identify and take an additional reference to the same newly created identical rule. This can leave a rule with a reference count greater than one unlinked from the tree and with uninitialized parent and root pointers. When its flow group is deleted, del_sw_hw_rule assumes the rule has a non-NULL parent and dereferences the NULL pointer. The fix links new rules that have no parent into the tree and initializes their tree relationships correctly.
