CVE-2024-36020 is a flaw in the Linux kernel i40e Ethernet driver’s virtual-function handling. A regression caused the affected function to maintain both an iteration variable and a virtual-function pointer as separate sources of state. Advancing the iterator did not update the pointer, but the code used them interchangeably. During reset races, the stale pointer could reference a different or unintended virtual function. The upstream fix removes the redundant iterator state and uses a single virtual-function pointer throughout the function to preserve pointer validity.
