CVE-2024-36073 is a remote code execution vulnerability in the shadowing component of Netwrix CoSoSys Endpoint Protector through 5.9.3 and CoSoSys Unify through 7.0.6 affecting macOS clients. The flaw is in the File Shadowing feature, where the macOS agent constructs an SMB mount command from server-provided configuration values and executes it through a shell invocation path using popen via a synchronous shell-command helper rather than a safer argument-separated execution API. Because server-controlled SMB path data is not safely sanitized before being embedded into the shell command, an attacker who has administrative access to the Endpoint Protector or Unify server can inject shell metacharacters, overwrite sensitive client configuration associated with shadowing behavior, and cause arbitrary system commands to run on a selected managed endpoint. Successful exploitation results in command execution with SYSTEM/root-equivalent privileges on the targeted client.
