CVE-2024-36886 is a use-after-free in the Linux kernel Transparent Inter-Process Communication (TIPC) networking stack. During fragmented-message reassembly, tipc_buf_append() can link the final fragment into the head buffer's fragment list and subsequently enter an error path when validation of the reassembled message fails. Cleanup frees the current fragment while it remains reachable through the head buffer's fragment list; later cleanup of the head buffer accesses the previously freed fragment. The issue affects TIPC-enabled Linux kernels in the reported 4.x through 6.8 range.
