CVE-2024-36940 is a double-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel pinctrl core. The pctldev structure is allocated by devm_pinctrl_register_and_init() and is managed by the device-resource framework, which releases it through devm_pinctrl_dev_release(). An incorrect free in pinctrl_enable() could release this devm-managed allocation prematurely; subsequent device-resource cleanup would free it again. The upstream fix removes the incorrect free from pinctrl_enable().
